Karl Urban has starred in some of the most memorable franchises and big-budget blockbuster films. While he may not be an A-list movie star, the actor has shown versatility through his diverse choices. His impressive performances in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Bourne Supremacy, Judge Dredd, The Boys, and the Star Trek reboot films have made him an interesting actor to watch on screen.

Urban played the iconic role of Leonard McCoy in the reboot film series, previously played by DeForest Kelley in the original 60s Star Trek series. The Boys star starred alongside Chris Pine in the films who played James Kirk. Fans have compared their performances to the actors who played their characters before while also praising Urban’s contribution to the franchise.
Fans Look Back Fondly On Karl Urban’s Brilliant Performance in J.J Abrams’ Star Trek Films

Karl Urban took over the role of Leonard McCoy in the Star Trek reboot films directed/produced by J.J. Abrams. The actor put on a compelling performance as the character, channeling the aura of DeForest Kelley while also making the role his own. Urban and Chris Pine co-led the reboot films with great confidence and fans are now looking back at how they fared in the movie.
On X, fans were very appreciative of how both actors took over the iconic roles from William Shatner and Kelley and put their own spin to it (with Pine’s performance getting comparisons to a young Harrison Ford). However, Urban is getting a special love for his pitch-perfect portrayal of McCoy as fans look back on how much he contributed to the franchise and making it compelling. Here are some of the reactions,
I once watched a video of Urban passionately talking about how much he loves Star Trek: The Motion Picture and I was like, "Oh, this guy gets it."

Pine goes full-on Harrison Ford in the Dungeons and Dragons movie, which is utterly delightful, if you haven't seen it yet…

I think there are moments of Shatner in Pine's performance, but they're subtle (the way he eats the apple, the way he sits in the captain's chair) but both he and Urban are great. Urban's FFS look when Spock gets beamed out in Beyond was perfection.

So much in these four pics alone. Steals every scene in LOTR….his Dredd is terrifying and perfect. We deserved more of his McCoy. (Was also best Borne adversary.) Glad to see him getting attention he deserves.

There's a moment in Into Darkness where I swear he just turned into Kelley.

Urban’s McCoy provided the intensity and pathos needed for fans to connect with him and root for his character. Despite being an IP franchise grossing 2.26 billion (via The Numbers), his performance in it continues to be appreciated by fans to this day and they still want him and Pine to return in a new Star Trek film.
Eric Kripke Details How Billy Butcher Is Fighting His Inner Demons Following The Big Twist

Karl Urban‘s Billy Butcher has had quite the journey in the latest season of The Boys with his tumor worsening, leading to major implications. His CIA friend Joe Kessler played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan has been a suspicious character and the new episode confirmed a major theory that fans have been bringing up over the years.
Episode 6 confirmed that Kessler is a figment of Butcher’s imagination and showrunner Eric Kripke revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Kessler represents the monstrous side of Butcher. He also compared him to Homelander (as opposite sides of the same coin) where they are both wrestling with being human/monsters. Kripke said,
Both Butcher and Homelander [played by Antony Starr], in very different ways, are wrestling with whether they’re human or whether they’re monsters. Kessler represents the monster side and Becca represents the human side of Butcher. Those two sides are at war with themselves, but they’re all Butcher.
The twist was a big revelatory moment for Butcher and this new realization will certainly affect his decisions going forward. It will be interesting to see how he deals with both the imaginary Becca and Kessler from now on. The first 6 episodes of season 4 of The Boys are streaming on Prime Video.
The modern Star Trek films with Chris Pine and Urban are available to stream on Paramount+.
