It has been 8 years since Star Trek Beyond hit theatres, whose financial failure stalled the production of the next movie in the franchise. While the third installment in the rebooted version of the franchise garnered a decent critical reception upon its release, despite making $334M at the box office, it was a financial letdown following its $185M budget.

But even though the film’s failure was responsible for stalling the production of the fourth entry in the Kelvin timeline series, Rihanna was more than thrilled about contributing to the Chris Pine-led flick.
Rihanna Was Beyond Ecstatic To Sing for Star Trek Beyond

Arguably one of the biggest musical icons of the 21st century, Rihanna has been pretty vocal about her love for the Star Trek franchise. Thanks to her father, she was introduced to the IP as a kid and has been enamored with it ever since.
So when the self-professed Star Trek fan finally got the opportunity to work on a song for Star Trek Beyond, she was beyond ecstatic.
It wasn’t like just doing a song for any random film. I love ‘Star Trek.’ It was automatic. I would do anything in terms of music. It’s such a big deal not only as a fan, [but] as a musician, because ‘Star Trek’ is such a big deal across the globe… I couldn’t believe it. I was very very honored to be a part of this film.
Unfortunately, like the film itself, her single didn’t replicate the heights of the singer’s other acclaimed works and barely impacted the charts in the United States. However, the song did much better in the United Kingdom, reaching No. 69 in the U.K., and held the position for three weeks.
The Upcoming Star Trek Movie Was Originally Planned To Be a TV Show

Almost a decade after Beyond‘s bombing, a new movie in the franchise, titled Stark Trek: Section 31, is set to release in 2025, which was originally planned to be a TV series. Speaking with Screen Rant, Star Trek executive producer Alex Kurtzman revealed that their shift in plans was a result of the pandemic, and out of the gate, they wanted Olatunde Osunsanmi to direct it.
Originally, this was going to be a television show. And then the pandemic hit, and everything changed overnight, so we decided we were gonna do a movie. Right out of the gate, I was like, well, if we’re gonna do a movie, Tunde has to direct it, because he’s amazing.
With Paramount dropping the upcoming film’s trailer, starring Michelle Yeoh, at the Comic Con, fans will hope this steers back the franchise’s boat on the right path in terms of movies.
Star Trek Beyond is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
