Leonard Nimoy immortalized the character of Spock in pop culture with his memorable performance in the OG Star Trek series. His take on the half-Vulcan first officer of the USS Enterprise earned him immense respect. He was so popular in his role that it was difficult for the fans to accept Zachary Quinto as the character in J.J. Abrams’ reboot trilogy.

Similar to the late Nimoy, Spock also became a significant stepping stone in Zachary Quinto’s career. Sadly, his performance in the role raised mixed responses from the hardcore Trekkies. Many fans felt Quinto’s Spock was not as good as Nimoy’s. But despite all the comparisons, Quinto shared a wholesome bond with the late Star Trek star.

Leonard Nimoy has a special place in Zachary Quinto’s heart

Leonard Nimoy played Spock with a unique realism that is still discussed among the ardent Trekkies. While Zachary Quinto also raised many headlines for playing Spock in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 Star Trek, soon many fans asserted that he lacked Nimoy’s charismatic and relatable approach.

When J.J. Abrams first made Star Trek in 2009, Leonard Nimoy also made a cameo in it as Spock Prime and shared the screen with Quinto’s Spock. As it was set in a different continuity, the elements of the OG series were not affected. Sadly after making cameo appearances in the first two films of J.J. Abrams’ trilogy, the legend passed away in 2015.

During an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert (see Time), Zachary Quinto admitted that he had a wonderful time with the late Star Trek legend. The 47-year-old said that his bond with Leonard Nimoy was one of his career’s greatest gifts, and he still misses it.

I’ve never met somebody who so fully embodied a sense of fulfillment in their life. He was such a tremendous artist, but philanthropist and generous person, and so intelligent. I miss him all the time, I really miss him so much at this point obviously, marking the anniversary of his passing. He was one of the greatest gifts that my career has brought into my personal life.

In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, Zachary Quinto also added that Leonard Nimoy never tried to influence his take on the character. The Snowden actor also visited Nimoy’s house for prolonged discussions on the character. But very soon, they formed a strong friendship and it was more about the personal bond than Spock.

Even though many fans still don’t prefer to watch Zachary Quinto over Leonard Nimoy, it cannot be denied that the young actor still treats the late actor with immense respect.

The American Horror Story actor said that his relationship with Leonard Nimoy helped him to understand the character better. Besides that, he also added to Trek Movie.com that the relationship enabled the audiences to accept him as the new version of the character.

I was so fortunate because of Leonard [Nimoy]’s involvement in the process, and the one thing I never could have anticipated was how instrumental he would become in my life personally. But from a creative standpoint, and from a professional standpoint, having that relationship and that introduction to this world helped me understand the character. I think it also helped audiences accept me as this new version of the character. And for that I was so eternally grateful.

It cannot be denied that the debate for best Spock will go on among the Trekkies for a long time. On top of that, the new Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has also introduced actor Ethan Peck as another version of Spock.

For a long time now, J.J. Abrams’ fourth Star Trek film is also rumored to be in production. Although the stars are doubtful about the project, it will be exciting to see if Zachary Quinto can make a place among fans with a fourth film.

Everything Star Trek can be streamed on Paramount+.
