Kate Mulgrew had the distinction of playing the first female captain in the Star Trek franchise. Headlining the sci-fi spinoff series Voyager, the actress played Captain Kathryn Janeway for seven seasons and went on to voice the role in Star Trek: Prodigy. She also starred as Red in the show Orange is the New Black.

Mulgrew recounted in her 2015 memoir about her struggles in life, which included the death of her two younger sisters and being a r*pe survivor. The actress also reportedly got pregnant while filming her breakthrough show Ryan’s Hope and gave up the child for adoption. The storyline was reportedly written into the show.

Kate Mulgrew is one of the most underrated actresses in Hollywood. Though she gained considerable appreciation for her roles in Star Trek: Voyager and Orange is the New Black, her skills can rival even the greatest of stars. She won several awards for her role in Orange is the New Black and was even nominated for an Emmy.

Mulgrew’s first breakthrough came in Ryan’s Hope, where she played the youngest daughter Mary Ryan. For two years, the actress portrayed the role and became a fan-favorite due to her performance. However, midway through the series, Mulgrew reportedly became pregnant, which was written into the show.

While she gave birth to the child and then gave it up for adoption, Mulgrew had to reportedly return to the sets of Ryan’s Hope only a few days after and delivered a monologue on motherhood with a fake baby.

She told The Daily Beast that this was the moment she realized how good of an actress she was. Mulgrew said,

That’s when I learned how good an actress I really am. Because I just wanted to disappear…I could not have foreseen how harrowing that day was going to be for me. But I survived it.

The monologue reportedly included talking about how the character Mary Ryan after delivering a baby at a young age would love the child till the day she died, which was no doubt a harrowing moment for a person, who just gave up her child for adoption indeed.

In events that seem to be straight out of a movie, Kate Mulgrew finally reconnected with her daughter Danielle more than two decades later. By now, Mulgrew was already known for her work in Star Trek: Voyager and had reportedly begun searching for her daughter years ago. The actress mentioned that the day she got a call from Danielle, she was late on set for the first time (via The Daily Beast).

Mulgrew mentioned that she had a loving relationship with Danielle for years after their 2001 reunion. She also said how important the event was for her life (via The Daily Beast),

My character was largely defined by the decision. By the attendant grief and regret, and then by what I was determined to do about that. I realized I was not going to be able to contain the size of that emotion without finding my daughter. So it was almost instant that I set myself on that path. It took 22 years to find her, but I did.

The actress wrote two memoirs, one in 2015 that chronicled her search for Danielle in 2015 called Born with Teeth, and then in 2019 called How to Forget.
