Gene Roddenberry created the Star Trek series after his time in the military and reportedly pitched it as an old Western in space type of a show. With the crew of the Enterprise, the series would explore many profound questions about humanity, existence, and what makes one a human through scientific inquiry and not just religious answers.

Despite his insistence on the spirit of inquiry and science, Roddenberry reportedly came from a religious family. He mentioned that he was also pushed to Church when he was a child, even though his father was notoriously absent from it. However, he still pushed against any supernatural explanations about life and took that spirit to Star Trek.

To boldly go where no man went before was the motto of the Star Trek franchise and to that effect, the show delved into many of humanity’s deepest mysteries. Created by Gene Roddenberry, the series focused on a space federation that explored the corners of the galaxy to explore the secrets of the universe.

Despite the metaphysical concept, Roddenberry was never interested in supernatural explanations for his questions about humanity. Coming from a devoutly religious family, the showrunner was reportedly inquisitive even in his childhood and did not accept religious and spiritual answers to many of his questions in life.

When asked about the concept of the Watchers in Star Trek: The Next Generation, Roddenberry mentioned that he felt the rest of humanity would be so if there was no concept of religion. He said to The Humanist,

I’ve always thought that, if we did not have supernatural explanations for all the things we might not understand right away, this is the way we would be, like the people on that planet. I was born into a supernatural world in which all my people—my family—usually said, ‘That is because God willed it,’ or gave other supernatural explanations for whatever happened. When you confront those statements on their own, they just don’t make sense.

He mentioned that his father encouraged him and trained him to be curious and look for proof rather than accept religious or supernatural answers.

For twenty years, Gene Roddenberry’s life only had Star Trek. The former military man wrote the original series in the ‘60s and despite his steadfast rules, came back to work on The Next Generation. While he dedicated his life to the series, Roddenberry had spoken about the time when he wanted to leave TV.

However, Roddenberry mentioned that he did not worry about life without Star Trek as much. He said,

Well, it goes back to a statement my grandmother made to me many years ago: ‘Keep pure, keep your head up, keep listening, and something will come along that you can do.’ She told me that one of the tricks of life was to keep pure. By that, she meant to keep true to your own beliefs. There are always opportunities. I would hate to think that, if I hadn’t done Star Trek, I wouldn’t have found something else that means just as much to me.

Before Star Trek, Roddenberry had contributed as a writer to several TV shows and even created a series called The Lieutenant.

Star Trek is available to stream on Paramount+.
