What if the Star Trek franchise made a swift turn like The Good Place and it turned out that everything good that they tried to do was backfiring in the real world? Well, it seems that Michelle Yeoh might be onto with her upcoming film.

Well, the idea seems to be good if done correctly, however, the early reviews are in and it does not seem to be looking too good for Star Trek: Section 31 and executive producer Alex Kurtzman.

Alex Kurtzman wanted to hold up a mirror to the real world

This has been said before (not exactly) by The Boys creator Eric Kripke who wanted to show the ugly side of superheroes via metaphors and allegories pertaining to the real world. Although it worked for the Amazon show, it doesn’t mean that the formula will work for everyone.

The Star Trek franchise has always been about being optimistic for a good future. That was Gene Roddenberry’s vision (the creator of the Star Trek franchise) and executive Alex Kurtzman had a choice to make.

Either he could follow the high morals of the original vision or he could hold up a mirror to show the reality of how you have to choose the lesser evil sometimes for the greater good. In an interview with TrekMovie, Kurtzman was asked about why Star Trek: Section 31 went on a darker path.

If we made a very dark Star Trek, I think people would legitimately be able to say, ‘Wow, that doesn’t feel like Star Trek.’ But we really tried to mitigate against the conversation by, first of all, making something that was really fun.

He further continued,

By putting in some very deliberate and specific references, obviously with Rachel Garrett being the most acute of those references, to what it means to be in the Federation and to be part of Star Trek and Starfleet.

Being fair to Kurtzman, fans will indeed receive a kind of warning at the start of the movie from veteran actress Michelle Yeoh who portrays the lead role of Philippa Georgiou in the franchise.

Even the trailer of the film felt like it was ‘inspired’ by the Assassin’s Creed franchise to come up with the concept. Not to say that the film is all-bad but hey, that’s what the reviews are saying so far.

Michelle Yeoh gives a word of warning in the movie

The movie isn’t out yet but the early reviews are in and they are not looking good. This is the first time in 9 years that a movie in the Star Trek franchise has been released and with Michelle Yeoh, fans had high expectations.

The trailer of the film even goes down to such depravity that there feels a need to include their concept of being the bad guys in every scene. Even during an interrogation, Omari Hardwick’s character says that Michelle Yeoh’s character was going to punch the villain if he doesn’t answer truthfully.

When he doesn’t answer, Hardwick’s character punches him. When asked about the small betrayal, Hardwick says “We lied.” That just goes on to show how hard the film might be trying to prove a point.

As the world awaits the release of Star Trek: Section 31, the early reviews do not tell a good tale about the film. Reviews mention that despite a stellar performance by Michelle Yeoh, the film wasn’t able to pull itself together.

You can check out for yourself when Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Section 31 releases on 24 January 2025 on Paramount+.
