Star Trek: Discovery’s finale certainly left many fans on the edges of their seats, with all of the twists and turns they were forced to go through. One of the biggest factors that could easily go down in history as one of the most memorable in Star Trek history was the fact that Kovich is actually Daniels from Star Trek: Enterprise.
David Cronenberg’s Reaction to the Plot Twist
Michelle Paradise, the showrunner of Star Trek: Discovery recently gave an interview with ScreenRant, where she went into great detail about the series. She also talked about the plot twist that shook the entire fandom. The showrunner was asked about David Cronenberg‘s reaction to the plot direction, and if he even knew who the character was.
Yeah, because he wasn’t familiar. But once we walked him through it, he thought it was really, really cool.

She started by revealing that Cronenberg, in fact, did not know who Daniels was. However, after the backstory was explained to him and the significance of the character was explained, he understood what the writers and creators wanted to do.
Not only did he understand it, but he also liked the direction they were taking, finding it to be quite ‘cool’.
A Trail of Breadcrumbs in Star Trek: Discovery
While the massive bomb was dropped on fans at the end of the fifth season, Michelle Paradise revealed that the decision to make Kovich into Daniels was made somewhere around the fourth season. Soon afterward, hints of it were dropped here and there in season five.
I think we had the pitch for it back in season four. Honestly, I don’t remember if it was in season four or so early in season five, but I think it was season four.

Since Daniels was a time traveler, he seems to have grown sentimental towards certain things that are no longer in use. Making this an Easter egg, there were several instances where Kovich was seen with a pen and paper in an era where they had been labeled as obsolete.
Because in season five, we started planting the breadcrumbs of it, where you see him writing with pen and paper, which is just such a weird thing for someone when we [have] holograms or holopads and stuff like that.

This is not the only example, and that seems to be the beauty of the reveal. Fans get to look back at the series again to see all of the hints that were dropped here and there.
