Star Trek: Voyager star Kate Mulgrew wasn’t shy about where she stood politically, and her endorsement might ruffle some MAGA feathers. The actress threw her support behind a high-profile U.S. politician known for clashing with Donald Trump at every turn.

Mulgrew called herself a huge fan and made it clear she’s backing brains, not bluster. For fans hoping their favorite sci-fi captain stayed neutral, she’s steering this ship straight into real-world politics, and she’s not afraid to speak her mind.

Kate Mulgrew backed Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Donald Trump fans won’t like it

Kate Mulgrew, best known as Captain Janeway from Star Trek: Voyager, alluded during a 2019 interview with TrekMovie that she’s backing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

Well, I’m a great fan of hers, and she of me. So I went out to her at one of her rallies in Queens, and I surprised her. Whoever was introducing her said, “And now, a person who Alexandria has known since she was a little girl, Captain Kathryn Janeway, Kate Mulgrew.” And she gasped, she turned.

And when I approached her, I think she kind of fell. It was one of those moments. And then when she said that when they lost their screen—they had bad reception in their house, and often the television was just black and white—she’d listen to it, like a radio show. And that was enough. I mean, the whole thing is marvelous.

What made it even more special was that Ocasio-Cortez grew up watching Voyager. With spotty TV reception at home, she used to listen to the show like a radio drama. That devotion hit Mulgrew hard, who sees shades of Janeway’s resilience and grit in the congresswoman’s political style.

The 70-year-old actress drew a bold parallel between AOC’s drive and Janeway’s epic leadership in space. Both women were steering through tough terrain, unafraid to take charge. To her, AOC was shaking the system and lighting a fire under fellow leaders like Katie Porter and Abby Finkenauer.

She even hinted that Ocasio-Cortez’s presence might ruffle feathers among the old guard, maybe even Nancy Pelosi. But that’s the kind of energy Mulgrew celebrated. Janeway wasn’t just a TV character to her; she was a cultural shift. When Hollywood put a woman in the captain’s chair, the Voyager star knew it was a sign of bigger change.

So perhaps, Trump fans won’t like this political team-up. But for Mulgrew, it’s about powerful women leading the charge. And in Ocasio-Cortez, she saw a fearless trailblazer, straight out of the Delta Quadrant.

Kate Mulgrew tried to make Star Trek: Voyager bolder, but Hollywood wasn’t ready

Kate Mulgrew pushed for a gay character on Star Trek: Voyager but the answer was a firm no. While she broke ground as the franchise’s first female lead captain, Mulgrew told fans at FAN EXPO Boston that she directly asked producer Rick Berman for LGBTQ+ representation. Her request was that she needed a “gay character” but she was told, “there wasn’t any room.”

Voyager, which aired from 1995 to 2001, inspired a generation but left out one key group. Twenty years later, in Star Trek: Picard, Seven of Nine was revealed as queer and sharing a relationship with Raffi Musiker. Now, Star Trek is bursting with LGBTQ+ characters, from Discovery‘s Stamets and Culber to Strange New Worlds‘ Nurse Chapel.

It’s not what Mulgrew got back then, but it’s what her legacy helped make possible now.
