Jeri Ryan played Seven of Nine in Star Trek: Voyager and boosted ratings for the series with her appearances. It is no secret that the character was aimed at a younger, male demographic, and her overly s*xualized character was part of the deal. However, Ryan reportedly faced the biggest issues from her lead star, Kate Mulgrew.

It has since been the stuff of legend that Voyager’s Captain Janeway did not approve of Jeri Ryan or Seven of Nine off-screen. Mulgrew also addressed her side of the story and how she felt that the show never needed a s*xualized female character. However, Ryan felt she had a better time, and her character received due credit when she returned for Picard.

Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine is one of the most popular characters in the Star Trek franchise. Along with characters like Spock and Data, Seven of Nine questioned the nuances of humanity with her inquisitive yet distant mind, as she went on a journey of healing from being assimilated into the Borg mind. Her journey in Voyager is actually incredible.

However, off-screen, her experience was reportedly not that great. Many stories of hostility between Ryan and Voyager’s lead star, Kate Mulgrew, made the rounds. While the two actors shared a mentor-mentee relationship on-screen, Ryan reportedly felt terrible as she faced the disapproval of Mulgrew for years.

Hence, the actress felt that the experience of Voyager colored her opinion on the franchise and her character itself. She said to Cinemablend,

I didn’t have a great experience on Voyager. The working experience was not super pleasant for me. So that kind of colored my perception in a lot of ways. Because that was a tough four years, but I was always acutely aware of how good a character Seven was from an acting perspective and how rich she was.

In an interview with Huffington Post, she also mentioned that though her character was s*xualized, she liked how Seven of Nine was written and the depth with which she was characterized.

While Jeri Ryan faced the wrath of Kate Mulgrew in Star Trek: Voyager, she became a fan favorite despite being introduced in season 4. Many storylines centered around her exploration of humanity and her journey to unlearn her Borg principles. By the time she returns in Star Trek: Picard, she has gone through a lot of changes.

Ryan, surprisingly, reprised her role in Picard, despite her not being a part of The Next Generation. However, Seven of Nine goes through a huge transformation, starting out as a rebel against the Federation with the Fenris Rangers. She is later made the interim captain of her own ship, giving her character a great win. She said,

I love everything about the way she’s been developed. I truly do. This season, especially, I think it hits all the right notes. It is just so true to the character, and I think that across the board for all the characters. And I think it’s ultimately just a really nice payoff for the fans and for this character for this journey.

From being hated by the Captain of the Voyager (not in the show) to being the captain of her own ship, Jeri Ryan’s journey in the Star Trek universe has been legendary.

Star Trek: Picard is available to stream on Paramount+.
